Marshall Public Schools receives $3.0 million dollars from the State of Michigan for use in Albion
IAN GILYARD-SCHNAITMAN

(Marshall, Michigan, November 3, 2023) During a legislative session on Thursday, November 2, 2023, legislators approved $3.0 million dollars in funding for Marshall Public Schools. House Bill 4292 grants the district funding for school infrastructure on a school building within the city of Albion.

The Michigan House of Representatives passed HB4292 by a vote of 56-52 with the Senate passing the measure by a vote of 21-17. The bill advances on to Governor Whitmer’s desk for signature.

As the news developed over the evening hours in Lansing, MPS Superintendent Rebecca Jones said, “We are thankful for the legislature's support of Marshall Public Schools. Through discussions with Representative Jim Haadsma and Governor Whitmer’s team, I fought hard to secure this funding for improvements in our district, specifically in our Albion community. While the appropriation wasn’t as large as I was asking for to support our district as a whole, these dollars will help us address some immediate needs in Albion.”

House bill 4292 states “Funding appropriated in part 1 for school infrastructure grant must be allocated to Marshall Public Schools for the infrastructure, construction, or improvement of a school building within the 2015-2016 geographic boundaries of the annexed Albion Public School District.”

Representative Jim Haadsma stated,  "This investment demonstrates our commitment to the kids in Marshall Public Schools, especially within the Albion area, where families are still adjusting to annexation. I will continue to look for ways to help, but I'm glad we could get something done this fall."

Superintendent Jones expressed her gratitude for the support,  “This $3 million dollar funding from the state will help our district. We are grateful for the hard work of Representative Jim Haadsma and his team as well as the members of the Executive Office of the Governor.”
